Highclere Castle in Berkshire, South East England, is the real-life location that famously became Downton Abbey in the award-winning television series. Surrounded by around 1,000 acres of beautiful parkland, this magnificent Victorian castle is home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, whose family has lived on the estate since 1679. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes was a long-standing family friend and had Highclere Castle in mind while developing the much-loved series.

During your visit to Highclere Castle, you can experience the atmosphere of Downton Abbey for yourself. Explore the elegant interiors used during filming, wander through the beautiful gardens and enjoy refreshments at the café. It’s a wonderful opportunity to step into the world of the Crawleys and discover one of England’s most iconic filming locations. Due to seasonal opening restrictions at Highclere Castle & Gardens, please check with us before booking to make sure the castle is open for your chosen tour date.

As part of your Downton Abbey tour, you may also have the opportunity to visit other filming locations featured in the series. These can include the historic city of Oxford, Bampton and St Mary’s Church, Swinbrook and the Swan Inn, The Old Forge in Shilton, and the beautiful Cotswold village of Castle Combe, often regarded as one of England’s prettiest villages.
