Tours to Bletchley Park & Woburn Abbey

Bletchley Park

During World War II, Bletchley Park was home to Britain’s codebreakers, including Alan Turing, and played a unique and major role in producing intelligence that affected the outcome of the war. The site now offers visitors the chance to see where the code breakers lived and worked, the Library and wartime garages complete with WWII vehicles.

Featured in films and TV programmes, including the Oscar nominated film ‘The Imitation Game’ – Bletchley Park currently has an exhibition about the making of that film featuring costumes worn by the stars and behind the scenes gems (exhibitions may change). A fascinating look into a once-secret world.

Woburn Abbey

The stunning Woburn Abbey and Gardens have evolved from the original 12th Century Abbey. With Royal connections through the ages, the Abbey is now the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford.

Today the Abbey offers visitors chance to explore 22 rooms housing over 250 works of art, as well as antique furniture, porcelain and other treasures. St Mary’s Woburn (pictured) is a local parish church built by the 8th Duke.

The Abbey is set in a beautiful parkland garden – landscaped areas include an original walled Kitchen Garden, as well as a maze, Camellia house conservatory and many other follies and features. A 3,000 acre deer park with 9 species of deer provides many public footpaths to enjoy.

Windsor, Eton & Hampton Court Tours

You’ll be treated like royalty on this very regal tour, that takes in Windsor Castle (one of the Queen’s official residences) and Hampton Court (where the notorious Henry VIII used to live), with its outstanding gardens an elaborate maze. Eton

Built-in 1514, it was once lived in by the notorious King Henry VIII (the ghost of one of his executed wives, Catherine Howard, is said to haunt the corridors!). Daily Telegraph building

Situated in London’s famous Fleet Street, the Daily Telegraph building is a must-see for the art deco fan. It was designed in 1928 and along with the nearby Daily Express building showcases art deco architecture at its best. Both buildings are now owned by Goldman Sachs bank.

The Savoy

Enjoy a Martini in splendid art deco luxury – and stay here for a night or two in one of the lavishly furnished rooms. This landmark hotel is on the famous Strand, overlooking the Thames. The Hoover Building

You shouldn’t miss The Hoover Building in West London, as it’s one of the capital’s foremost examples of art deco architecture. It was designed for the Hoover Company, by architects Wallis Gilbert, between 1931 and 1935. It’s now owned by Tesco – so you can buy your tea bags in style!

Eltham Palace

This opulent art deco home is attached to a medieval palace. Constructed in 1933 for millionaire Stephen Coulthard, it has some ground-breaking features including centralised vacuum cleaning and a loudspeaker system. There’s also a special lift for the pet monkey. Eltham Palace also arrange special events such as art deco tours, medieval jousting, and great stuff for the kids too. Nearby attractions include the famous antiques markets in Greenwich, the National Maritime Museum, Chislehurst Caves and The Royal Artillery Museum.

Battersea Power Station

This glorious building, completed in 1934, used to be a power station, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott. There have been many ideas to renovate and make use of the structure, but it’s sadly currently derelict. Work is currently underway, however, to improve the integrity of the 4 great deco chimneys.

Claridge’s

This hotel was redesigned in art deco style in the 1920s – and is one of the most beautiful places in the world to take afternoon tea. Admire the sculptures, made with Lalique glass… then head for nearby Bond Street for a spot of shopping…

Leeds Castle

Dover

The White Cliffs of Dover are a magnificent coastal site overlooking the English Channel and have stood loyally throughout invasions and two world wars. You can see reminders of this at the newly opened Fan Bay Deep Shelter a complex of Second World War tunnels hidden within the chalk. Perched on the cliffs is the historic Dover Castle, one of the largest castles in England displaying traces from the Saxon and Norman times to Napoleonic and the 20th century World Wars.
